Analysis of Student Videos, digipaks and adverts

Grade: A/B

Overall the video is well-made and the use of props and location makes this video creative and relevant to the music and the lyrics. The video is paced well and the video feels like its not too slow for the music as the music is fairly fast paced. The locations are used well and keep the video interesting. The only criticism would be the drummer and guitarist could have been more active. The clothing used works with the narrative as the characters are wearing casual clothing. The use of a variety of wide shots, close ups and panning shots makes this video creative and interesting for the viewer. There are very few mistakes throughout this video.

0:35 - The use of black and white is well used to differentiate between the 'narrative' and the band playing the instruments.

0:53 - creative use of camera angle to show the two characters

1:10 - Good use of location and makes the video more interesting

1:44 - The use of a projector on the bedding is very well done and a very creative way of showing the main character in the narrative.

2:08 - The singer is in time with the music and works well.

2:15 - Drummer seems to be too slow and out of beat with the music.

This video is overall well put together and from looking at the marking sheet would deserve the grade of A/B

Grade: C/D

Overall the video is moderately well done with attempts at being creative throughout the video. The use of the close up shot with the two lip syncing I think didn't work because of the poor lip syncing making it obvious to the viewer that they are not really singing. Their is not a huge variety of camera angles in this video with most of the shots being from the boy and the girl lip syncing. I struggled to find any narrative from this video and felt like the shots are all just being put together with little thought. I liked the use of the timelapse and I did add something to the video to make it more interesting but the whole video felt inconsistent with lyrics being shown on one half and the first half they haven't although the way they used props to show the lyrics was well done it just didn't work with the other parts of the video.

0:15 - This opening panning shot is shown too long.

0:34 - creative use of editing, making the video more interesting

0:37 - The lip syncing is completely out of time, and is obvious to the viewer

1:11 - Nice way of implementing a new shot.

1:26 - Great use of props and location

1:31 - The use of this shot is too long

1:49 - Nice variety of different shots towards the end

The video overall has some problems however still is effective in some areas, I believe this would be grading as D/C.

Grade: C/D

Overall the video is moderately well made. The video starts well with a nice variety of shots. Their are lots of attempts at using creative ways of transitioning between scenes for example the pictures in the book however I feel its a little forced at times and it doesn't really work most of the time. The narrative was shown well and the point that the video is trying to get across was clear. The lip syncing was okay sometimes it was off time and other times it worked. The variety of camera angles was lacking slightly in this video, however I think the use of interesting and creative backdrops and locations helped bring this video back up.

0:05 - Good start with a nice opening shot

0:21 - Good attempt at finding a creative way of transitioning the shot, however I find it didn't quite fit.

0:51 - Lip syncing is a little off time

1:45 - Good use of footage to add to the narrative and keep the viewer interested in the point being made in the video

2:45 - This transition seems quite forced and the shot is held for a little too long

3:02 - Could have used a more interesting location for this scene as a classroom makes the video seem unprofessional

3:36 - The attempts at showing the character playing the piano is creative and worked well

4:28 - This final scene doesn't make very much sense with it being in reverse and I did find myself questioning why the video was being played in reverse.

Digipak 1:

The digipak is dark and shows lots of themes related to rock music, I like the way they have used each pannel to show each of the band members, this is a creative way of showing each of the people in the band. I however don't like the font used for the song list as I think it doesn't fit with the other parts of the digipak design. The text used to describe the band I think looks too wordy and should be shorter.

Digipak 2:

This digipak design is simplistic and I like the fact that their is very little text or images as it makes the design seem subtle and clean. This makes it aesthetically pleasing and easy to look at. i also like the colours used for the text and the fonts also work well together. The consistency between the song list and front cover also makes this digipak work well.

Digipak 3:

The final digipak seems to be based off a vocal artist and some nice images have been used to fill the different panels of the digipak, I like the text and font used for this designa also the creative way of showing the text on the song list panel. I think the images such as the lights and flowers work well to show the themes of the artist and help to keep the digipak design interesting.

Learning Comment

The genre that makes the best videos from this list was the first video being pop-rock, this however I do not think it was because of the music genre but because of the choice of narrative. The one thing I have seen from the videos that I think I would use would be the use of lots of different interesting locations also the use of some certain shots for example a time-lapse as shown in the second video worked well. I have learn't that its important to pace the video with the music for example if the song is slow the video needs to have a somewhat slow pace but not be too slow to a point where it bores the viewer, and if the music is fast the video needs to keep up with the music to work well. I have also learn't some of the possibilities that I have for when creating my own video as this has helped to inspire and allow me to think of some ideas for my own video.
